Wendy came to the studio, last November, on the off chance that I might be able to help her with a goal. She had attended the PCA Welsh Championships in the Port Talbot Princess Royal Theatre that May and decided that she wanted to enter a bikini competition, something she had wanted to do for a while especially after her brush with death four years ago.
You see, Wendy is a survivor of a stroke, she had a brain aneurysm, and she’s pretty bloody amazing!
Wendy had lost around 2 stones in weight before she met me, but she was having trouble finding anyone locally who would help her lose weight and strength train without the use of supplements (other than a multi-vit) and added extras. Wendy wanted to do this 100% naturally. And so…she did! Utilising what knowledge I had and tapping into the knowledge of the wider training community, we started her road to the PCA Welsh Championships.
To say I felt like a duck out of water is quite the understatement. This has been a huge learning curve for me as a trainer, and there are many lessons I’ve learned…not least, ask help from those in the know. I am not a competitor trainer, I’m still not, I’m still learning that so this has been quite the ride. But it’s not about me, it’s about Wendy-Woo.
Wendy runs her own business, is an avid horse rider and has a family so time isn’t in great supply but as her workouts slowly increased in intensity and number she really did take it all in her stride. Wendy’s goal wasn’t to get on stage and win but to just get up there and say ‘look how hard I’ve worked’ while putting a middle finger up to the grim reaper (her words). And I for one could not have been more proud.
Had we had another 6 months, and knowing her work ethic, I think we could have got Wendy to a point where she would have placed in her category. The biggest stumbling block we had was her mid drift, because of a number of surgeries on the same area over 20 years. However, following the Hit The Target food plan, as set out by StrongFirst Master trainer Fabio Zonin and with trial and error on her training plans, her abdominal region tightened and shrunk. Her musculature started to define and her strength went through the roof. I am so unbelievably proud of what Wendy achieved. It really was a huge learning curve for us both.
In nine months Wendy lost 25lbs/11kg in weight, almost 17% body fat and 12.5 inches all over. She can deadlift over her body weight, swing heavy kettlebells with ease and most importantly feels stronger and fitter than ever. She has lost, in total almost 4 stone (almost 56lbs/25kg) in little over 4 years.
Wendy has the bug for the stage and, after taking a well earned breather from such intense training, is looking to improve on what she achieved this year by placing at next year’s PCA competition. She really is one determined lady, and I know she’ll do it.
